Step-by-step: How to look up your license
- 1Go to search.dca.ca.gov in any browser. (Chrome or Firefox works best — Safari can sometimes time out.)
- 2Under "Search by Board", select "Board of Barbering and Cosmetology" from the dropdown.
- 3Enter your first name, last name, or your license number if you have it. You don't need both.
- 4Click Search. Your name and license record should appear in the results list.
- 5Click your name to open the license detail. Check that License Status reads "Current and Active".
- 6Note the Expiration Date — this is when your license needs to be renewed. Screenshot this page for your records.
California BBC license numbers start with a letter prefix: C for cosmetologist, E for esthetician, N for nail technician, B for barber. Example: C123456.
What your license status means
You are licensed and legally authorized to perform services. Your expiration date is in the future. No action needed until 60–90 days before expiration.
Your license has passed its expiration date. Stop performing services immediately. You can renew late through BreEZe — a late fee applies. After 3 years expired, reexamination may be required.
The license was voluntarily surrendered or administratively cancelled for non-renewal. You will need to apply as a new applicant and retake the exam.
Your license is active but subject to discipline conditions set by the BBC. You may legally perform services unless the order says otherwise. Read the board order carefully.
Common BreEZe problems — and what to do
My name doesn't appear in search results
Try searching with only your last name, or use your license number directly. If you recently changed your name, BreEZe may still have your old name on file. Also try searching under a maiden name or alternate spelling.
I paid for renewal but my status still shows Expired
BreEZe status updates can take 3–5 business days after payment. Check your bank statement to confirm the charge went through. If it did and 7 days have passed, call BBC directly: (800) 952-5210.
I can't log in to my BreEZe account
Use the "Forgot Password" link on the BreEZe login page. If that doesn't work, you may have multiple accounts — a common BreEZe problem. Call BBC to consolidate: (800) 952-5210. The license lookup at search.dca.ca.gov works without any login.
The page times out while I'm filling out the renewal form
BreEZe sessions expire after about 20 minutes of inactivity. Prepare all your information before starting — CE certificate details, credit card, address. Don't leave the page open while you look things up.
My document upload fails with no error message
BreEZe accepts PDF files under 10 MB. If your file is larger, compress it first at smallpdf.com. If it still fails, try a different browser (Firefox tends to work better than Chrome for uploads).
I don't know when my license expires
California BBC uses a birthday-based renewal cycle — your license expires on your birthday every two years. Look up your record on search.dca.ca.gov; the exact expiration date is shown on the license detail page.
Performing cosmetology services without a current license in California can result in a fine of up to $1,000 per violation and a citation from BBC. Employers who knowingly allow unlicensed work face separate penalties. Always verify before your first day at a new salon.
